Rugged Cases for Tablets and Phones

Drop standards, screen protection, port covers and when a heavy case is worth it

A rugged case adds bulk and weight in exchange for surviving drops that would otherwise end a device. Whether that trade is worth making depends entirely on where the device actually goes.

What makes a case protective

Three things: a raised lip around the screen so the glass never contacts a flat surface, reinforced corners where impact energy concentrates, and a shock-absorbing inner layer inside a harder outer shell.

A single-layer slim case does almost none of this. It protects against scratches and against nothing else.

Drop test claims

MIL-STD-810 is quoted constantly and is a set of test methods rather than a pass mark. Manufacturers choose which tests to run and under what conditions, so the claim means little without detail.

A stated drop height onto a stated surface is more informative. Concrete and a hard edge are considerably harsher than plywood.

Built-in screen protection

Cases with an integrated screen cover protect against scratches from keys and grit and can affect touch sensitivity slightly. A separate tempered glass protector with a raised-lip case is the alternative and is cheaper to replace.

Check whether the case works with your screen protector, since many do not.

Port covers and water

Rubber port plugs keep dust and splashes out and are not a waterproof rating unless stated. Cases described as water resistant are not the same as a sealed waterproof case rated to a depth.

Check the cover does not block the charging cable you actually use.

Tablets in particular

Tablets are dropped from higher, held by children and used flat on hard surfaces, which is why they benefit more from a rugged case than phones do. A built-in stand and a hand strap make one considerably more usable.

Cases for children

Children drop tablets constantly and from standing height. A case with a built-in stand, a shoulder strap and a screen cover is considerably more practical than a slim one, and it survives being thrown into a bag.

Check the case does not block the camera or the volume buttons, which children use constantly.

Replacing versus repairing

A case costs a fraction of a screen repair, and a cracked screen also compromises any water resistance the device had. That is the whole economic argument.

Screen protectors are consumable and designed to be replaced, which is the point of having one.

The trade-offs

Weight, bulk, heat during charging, and wireless charging frequently not working through thicker cases. Check that specifically if you charge wirelessly.

Clean the inside of the case periodically, since grit trapped against the back scratches the device it is protecting.
