Bags for Carrying a Laptop
What actually protects a laptop, backpacks and totes, fit and what to carry
A laptop bag is judged on whether the machine survives a drop and whether your shoulders survive the commute.
What actually protects it
A suspended compartment that does not touch the bottom of the bag, since most damage happens when a bag is set down hard. Padding on all sides, and a closure that cannot flip open.
A separate padded sleeve inside any bag achieves most of this for very little, and lets you use a bag you already own.
Backpacks and totes
A backpack with both straps used spreads the weight across the spine and is the right answer for anything heavy or any distance. A tote or a messenger bag loads one shoulder, which causes neck and back problems over years.
If you use a single-strap bag, swap sides regularly and keep it light.
Fit
The bag should sit on the back rather than sagging below the hips, with adjustable straps and, for heavier loads, a sternum strap. Wide straps are considerably more comfortable than thin ones.
The practical details
A water bottle pocket on the outside, a pocket you can reach without opening the main compartment, and a bottom panel that tolerates being put down on wet ground.
Check whether it fits under an airline seat if you travel.
What to carry
Empty it weekly. Most people carry a charger they never use, papers they never read and two cables where one would do.
Materials
Nylon and polyester are light, water resistant and easy to clean. Waxed canvas and leather look better and weigh more, and leather marks in rain unless treated.
Check the zips, since that is where bags fail first, and whether the base is reinforced.
Cleaning
Empty it completely, vacuum the inside, and wipe or wash according to the label. A bag carried daily collects an astonishing amount of crumbs and grit.
Buying
Check the stated laptop size against your machine rather than the brand's own model names, since a 14 inch laptop from one maker is larger than another's.
Posture and weight
A loaded bag on one shoulder loads one side of the spine all day. Keep the weight under about ten percent of body weight where you can, pack heavy items closest to the back, and use both straps.
Persistent shoulder or neck pain from a commute is worth mentioning to a physiotherapist rather than living with.
Travelling with a laptop
Keep it in hand luggage, know how the airport wants it presented at security, and never check it in the hold.
Security
Never leave a bag unattended, and keep the laptop out of sight in a car.
