Buying From Overseas Marketplaces
Import charges, safety marks, what to avoid entirely and your rights
Overseas marketplaces are cheap for a reason, and the things worth knowing are about safety and paperwork rather than quality alone.
Import charges
Goods arriving from outside your customs union attract import VAT and, above a threshold, customs duty, plus a carrier handling fee. Many marketplaces now collect VAT at checkout, and many do not.
Check the total landed cost rather than the item price, since the fee frequently erases the saving on small orders.
Safety marks
Electrical goods sold in the UK and EU must meet safety requirements and carry UKCA or CE marking, and marketplace listings frequently do not. Investigations have repeatedly found unsafe chargers, plugs and toys sold this way.
Anything with a mains plug, a lithium battery or that a child will use is where the risk concentrates. A counterfeit charger is a genuine fire and shock hazard.
What to avoid entirely
Chargers and power supplies, extension leads, smoke alarms, car parts, helmets and protective equipment, cosmetics, and anything for a baby or small child. None of these are worth saving money on.
What works well
Cables, cases, hobby components, craft materials, tools and parts where a failure costs nothing.
Counterfeits
Branded goods at a fraction of retail are counterfeit, and importing them is a customs matter as well as a quality one. Cosmetics, electronics and children's products are the categories where fakes cause real harm.
Report counterfeits to the marketplace and to the brand.
Reviews and listings
Photographs in reviews tell you more than star ratings, which are easily manipulated. Read the specification rather than the title, since titles are written for search rather than accuracy.
Returns
Returning to an overseas seller is frequently more expensive than the item. Factor that in and treat anything cheap as non-returnable.
Lithium batteries
Cheap power banks, battery packs and anything with an unbranded cell are where the fire risk concentrates. Buy these from established brands with a safety certification, and never charge unattended.
Airlines prohibit lithium batteries above a certain capacity, and damaged packs must never be posted.
Delivery times
Expect weeks rather than days, and check the stated delivery window before ordering anything needed for a date.
Sizing and materials
Clothing sized for other markets runs considerably smaller, so work from the measurements in centimetres rather than the size label. Fabric composition is frequently inaccurate on listings.
Expect variation between the photograph and the item, and read reviews with customer photographs.
Your rights
A seller outside your country is difficult to pursue, so your practical protection is the marketplace's own process and your payment provider. Pay by a method offering protection.
Expect long delivery times and keep the order details.
