Ordering From AliExpress: Shipping, Disputes and What to Avoid
Seller ratings, delivery times, the dispute window and safety-critical items
AliExpress connects buyers directly to a very large number of independent sellers, which is why prices are low and why experiences vary so much. Almost all of the variation is predictable from the listing.
You are buying from a seller, not the platform
Check the store's rating, how long it has traded and its recent feedback rather than only the product page. A high rating on a store opened last month means very little.
Photographs are frequently taken from elsewhere. Look for reviews containing buyer images, which show what actually arrives.
Shipping times
Standard shipping commonly takes several weeks and stretches further around Chinese New Year and other peak periods, when many sellers close entirely for a fortnight.
Check where the item ships from, since some listings dispatch from a local warehouse in days at a slightly higher price.
The buyer protection window
Every order has a protection period, and disputes must be opened before it expires. If an item has not arrived and the clock is running down, open the dispute rather than waiting politely.
Extend the delivery time through the app instead of letting protection lapse, and keep messages within the platform rather than moving to email or a messaging app.
What not to buy here
Anything mains powered without verified certification, anything for a child, car safety components, and cosmetics. Enforcement of product safety standards on direct imports is limited, and chargers and batteries are where this matters most.
Import charges
Duty, tax and a courier handling fee may be charged on arrival unless collected at checkout. The handling fee alone can exceed the saving on a cheap item.
What is worth buying
Low-value accessories, craft supplies, phone cases, cables where certification is not safety critical, and niche parts that are simply unavailable locally. The price gap absorbs the wait and the risk.
Everyday items where the saving is marginal rarely justify a three-week wait.
Reading reviews
Sort by lowest rating and read recent ones, which is where the actual failure modes appear. A listing with only perfect reviews and no detail is worth treating cautiously.
Reviews on the seller's other products tell you how they handle problems.
Returns
Return postage overseas frequently exceeds the value of the item, so a refund without return is the usual resolution on cheap goods. Factor that in before ordering anything you are unsure about.
Counterfeits
Branded goods at implausible prices are counterfeit. Customs seize them and you lose both the goods and the money.
Pay with a method offering a chargeback route and screenshot the listing, since listings are edited and removed.
