Roaming, eSIMs and Using a Phone Abroad
How roaming charges work now, eSIM travel plans, avoiding bill shock and practicalities
Using a phone abroad is cheaper than it was and less automatic than people assume, particularly since UK rules changed.
Within the EU and EEA
Roaming within the EU is generally included at domestic rates for EU customers under the roam-like-at-home rules, subject to fair use limits.
For UK customers those rules no longer apply automatically, and several operators have reintroduced daily roaming charges. Check your specific plan rather than assuming.
Outside those areas
Charges vary enormously, and data outside a bundle can be extremely expensive. Most operators offer daily or weekly passes, which are worth buying before travelling rather than discovering the alternative.
Cruise ships and aircraft use satellite networks that are not covered by any roaming agreement and are charged at very high rates.
eSIM travel plans
A data-only eSIM bought before you travel is frequently the cheapest option, and it installs in minutes without swapping anything. Your normal number stays active for calls and texts.
Check the phone supports eSIM and is not network locked.
Avoiding bill shock
Turn off data roaming until you have a plan in place, set a spending cap where the operator offers one, and disable automatic backups and updates over mobile data.
Download maps, tickets and entertainment before leaving.
Before you travel
Check the roaming terms on your specific plan, the fair use data limit and whether calls and texts home are included. Save the operator's customer service number, since the in-app chat needs data.
Note your phone's IMEI somewhere separate in case it is stolen.
Local SIMs
A local physical SIM is frequently cheapest for a long stay and means a different number. Check your phone is unlocked before travelling.
Wifi and security
Public wifi abroad is no different from anywhere else — use HTTPS sites, avoid banking on an unknown network and keep your phone updated.
Calls and messaging
Messaging apps over wifi avoid roaming charges entirely for calls and texts, which is what most travellers use. Keep one way to be reached that does not need data, such as a text.
Check whether calls to local numbers at your destination are charged as international.
Losing a phone abroad
Know how to suspend the SIM and wipe the device remotely, and keep a note of your accounts somewhere separate.
Choosing a plan
Check the data allowance against what you actually use, which most people overestimate. Rolling monthly plans cost slightly more and let you change when a better offer appears.
Coverage matters more than price where you live and work, so check the maps and ask neighbours.
Practicalities
Save an offline copy of your travel documents, and keep an emergency contact reachable without data.
Check whether emergency numbers differ at your destination.
