Bathrobes and Bathroom Textiles
Waffle, terry and velour compared, weight, sizing and washing
A bathrobe is used daily and chosen once, and the fabric determines almost everything about how it performs.
The three main fabrics
Terry towelling is the most absorbent, the heaviest and the slowest to dry. Waffle weave is light, dries fast and absorbs moderately, which suits warm climates and travel.
Velour is terry with the loops sheared, which looks smoother and absorbs considerably less. Fleece is warm and does not absorb at all.
If you want to dry yourself in it, terry or waffle. If you want to wear it over clothing, velour or fleece.
Weight
Grams per square metre tells you the substance. Around 300 to 400 is a light waffle robe; 500 and above is a substantial terry one that takes a long time to dry.
Heavier is not automatically better, particularly in a small bathroom with poor ventilation where a dense robe stays damp.
Sizing
Robes are cut generously and are still frequently short in the sleeve and the body. Check the stated length from shoulder to hem, and check the sleeve length if you have long arms.
A belt that is long enough to tie comfortably is the detail most often wrong.
Washing
Wash new textiles two or three times before judging absorbency, since finishing treatments repel water. Never use fabric softener on anything absorbent, which coats the fibres permanently.
Wash at sixty degrees periodically and dry thoroughly and promptly.
Drying between uses
Hang spread out on a hook or a rail rather than folded, so air reaches both faces. This does more for the life of a robe than anything else.
How many to own
Two robes per regular user means one is always available while the other dries or is washed. A robe put back on damp every day never fully dries and starts to smell whatever you do.
Keep a lighter one for summer, since a heavy terry robe in July is unwearable.
As a gift
Robes suit gifting because sizing is forgiving, and a waffle robe suits almost anyone. Check whether it can be monogrammed and allow production time on top of delivery.
The rest of the bathroom
Bath sheets are considerably larger than bath towels and take far longer to dry, so a smaller towel dried properly beats a large damp one. Hand towels and face cloths wear out fastest.
Keep a separate set for guests, which saves finding clean ones at short notice.
Bathroom ventilation
Textiles that never fully dry develop odour whatever you do. An extract fan run during and after showering is the underlying fix.
