WiZ Smart Bulbs: Smart Lighting Without the Hub

The cheaper route into connected lighting, and what you give up for it

Most people who investigate smart lighting stop at the first price they see and decide the whole category is overpriced. WiZ exists for exactly that person. It is made by the same parent company as Philips Hue, uses the same manufacturing, and costs a fraction — because it removes the one component that makes Hue expensive.

No bridge, no hub, no extra box

WiZ bulbs connect straight to your home Wi-Fi. There is nothing to plug into your router and nothing extra to buy. You screw in the bulb, open the app, join it to your network, and it works. For anyone who has been put off by the idea of adding another device to a crowded shelf, that is the entire pitch.

It also means the system works from anywhere without additional setup. Because the bulbs are on your internet connection rather than a local radio network, remote control is built in rather than dependent on a bridge sitting at home.

What you actually give up

Response time is marginally slower than a dedicated radio protocol, measured in fractions of a second rather than anything you would call a delay. More importantly, every bulb occupies a slot on your Wi-Fi network. With six bulbs this is irrelevant. With thirty, on an older router, it becomes a genuine consideration.

The ecosystem of accessories is also thinner. Hue has a deep range of motion sensors, switches and third-party integrations built up over a decade. WiZ has the essentials and not much beyond them.

Where it is the better buy

Renting is the clearest case. Bulbs travel with you, nothing is installed, and you have not committed several hundred to a system you leave behind. Lighting one or two rooms is another — the bridge cost only amortises sensibly across a whole house.

It is also the right answer if you want colour but are not sure you will use it. Colour bulbs at this price let you find out without the commitment, and if you later decide you want the full system, you will know exactly which rooms justify it.

Practical buying notes

Check the fitting before ordering — E26 in the US, B22 or E27 in the UK, and GU10 for downlights. Photograph the base of your existing bulb before throwing it away, because this is the single most common reason smart bulbs get returned unopened.

Also remember that any smart bulb needs constant power at the socket. If someone flips the wall switch off, the bulb is simply off and the app cannot reach it. A cheap smart switch or a clear household rule solves this, and it is worth deciding which before you install anything.
