Heat Styling Without Destroying Your Hair

What heat does, temperature settings, protectants and the tools that matter

Heat damage is cumulative and permanent, because hair is not living tissue and cannot repair itself. Everything about styling well follows from that.

What heat actually does

Above roughly 150 degrees, the keratin structure begins to change irreversibly. High heat also boils water trapped inside the strand, which forms bubbles and causes breakage.

Damaged hair looks the same at the root and worse at the ends, because the ends have been styled hundreds more times.

Temperature

Use the lowest setting that works. Fine or bleached hair generally needs 150 to 170 degrees; coarse or very curly hair may need 180 to 200. Almost nobody needs 230.

Adjustable temperature is the single specification worth paying for, since fixed-temperature tools run hot.

Never style wet hair

Straighteners on damp hair cause the bubbling described above. Hair should be fully dry before any iron touches it, and a hot brush or a steam tool is a different category with its own instructions.

Heat protectant

Works by distributing heat and slowing transfer rather than blocking it. Apply to damp hair before drying and again lightly before ironing, and let it dry before applying heat.

It reduces damage rather than preventing it.

Technique

One slow pass beats three fast ones. Work in thin sections, which is faster overall and needs less heat.

Giving hair a break

Air drying some days, rough drying to eighty percent before finishing with heat, and overnight styles without heat all reduce cumulative exposure.

A satin pillowcase and loose ties reduce friction damage, which is separate from heat damage and just as real.

Choosing a tool

Ceramic distributes heat evenly and suits fine or fragile hair. Titanium runs hotter and heats faster, which suits coarse or very thick hair and punishes careless use.

Floating plates on straighteners reduce snagging, and a tool that reaches temperature quickly means less time held on the hair.

Drying without damage

Squeeze the water out with a towel rather than rubbing at it, use a microfibre towel or an old cotton t-shirt, and let hair dry to around eighty percent before any heat. Wet hair is at its most fragile and stretches before it breaks.

Protective styles and breaks

Overnight braids, rollers and heatless curl sets give shape without any heat at all, and they suit fine or already damaged hair particularly well.

Trim any split ends regularly, since a split travels up the strand and cannot be repaired by any product, whatever the label says.

When it is not styling

Sudden or patchy hair loss, scalp pain or persistent scaling needs a doctor or a trichologist.
